Wheelchair Assessment
At Mission Physical Rehabilitation, we recognize the significance of wheelchair assessments in providing optimal care and support for individuals with mobility challenges. As a result, we created the Mission Mobility program. Within this program, we have physical and occupational therapists that specialize in wheelchair assessments. A comprehensive wheelchair assessment utilizing the clinical expertise of our of our physical and occupational therapists is essential to ensure that individuals receive the right wheelchair that meets their unique needs and enhances their quality of life.
So, what are the benefits of a comprehensive wheelchair assessment? First, insurance companies rely on wheelchair assessments in order to determine medical necessity for prompt coverage of the mobility device. Second, each patient can be confident that his or her physical impairments and functional limitations will be properly addressed in the recommended device.
Wheelchair assessments with the resulting prescribed mobility device can aid in the prevention of (to include but not limited to):
- Pressure injuries through providing cushions that promote with skin protection, positioning, and weight distribution
- Spinal deformities through the addition of wheelchair components that support the head, neck, trunk, and pelvis in proper alignment
- Joint contractures through the addition of extremity supports that assist with upper and lower extremity positioning and range of motion
- Falls with associated injury through prescribing the correct device that corresponds to each patient’s level of balance and mobility
